It: Welcome to Derry Premieres Second Ahead of Schedule on HBO Max
Fans are eagerly awaiting for the horror series Welcome to Derry, which is earning acclaim and weaving in elements from the broader King universe. Now, the broadcaster announced that the second installment will arrive early, timed perfectly for Halloween.
Early Release Information
Kicking off on the last day of October at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, the second episode of Welcome to Derry will launch on the streaming service, before its linear broadcast. Subsequent episodes of the show's first season will continue to air on Sunday nights on both HBO and its streaming arm, culminating in the season finale on Sunday, December 14.
Show Background
Based in Stephen King’s It universe, It: Welcome to Derry is inspired by the classic book while expanding on the universe realized by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in It and It Chapter Two. The first It movie centered on kids and teens confronting terrifying threats, thus it's suitable that the series upholds that legacy. Yet, the first installment of the HBO series demonstrates it set out to increase the tension, offering more frightening moments than Muschietti’s films and creating a dark atmosphere for the rest of the season.
Premise and Ideas
Taking place in the 1960s, this show introduces a new generation of parents and youngsters living in a seemingly idyllic town concealing a sinister core. The town follows a brutal, periodic loop—defined by aggression, prejudice, and paranormal events, as a evil entity resurfaces each 27-year cycle. Although Welcome to Derry might appear like it strays too near to the films initially, what differentiates the streaming show is its parallel storytelling—told from the perspectives of kids and grown-ups concurrently. The kids are highly exposed to the monster's horror, but the adults aren’t spared confronting their own nightmares born from local discrimination and lurking supernatural forces.
Episode 2 airs on the 31st of October at 3 a.m. EST.
