A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a nation grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by three suspects, with one shot at him before running away.

The motive of the incident remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was leaving a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had devoted time at the site managing the installation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unidentified individuals, it was reported.

"Authorities believe the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," an official report confirmed.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a man with dreadlocks and dressed in what resembled a protective services outfit firing shots on Stock before running away.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but fell down across the street.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the attack.

Key evidence, like bullet casings, were discovered at the crime scene.

Appeal for Witnesses

Officials are asking eyewitnesses who may have seen the suspects to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to determine their whereabouts," added an official.

His sister, a close relative, stated the loved ones are reeling to come to terms with the loss.

"Words fail me. I cannot express the pain," she stated.
"Everyone understood he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were ready to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."

She appealed to the citizens to avoid sharing explicit content from the scene, saying this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's young family.
