Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this week, reacting to recent comments from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M extension.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly split between the player and his mentor.
