Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
