Shoaib Bashir Earns Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Squad
England have opted for a 12-man squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a surprise place.
Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged several past matches.
In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with seamers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
In July, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
