Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for freedom in episode 6 leads them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel
After locating Max in the world called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is known about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in season 2.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to fortify himself.
This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict to come.
